In this article, a hybrid approach for reactive power planning has been proposed that makes use of both numerical and analytical methods. Optimal power flow formulations with four different objectives have been solved for a system-intact and for a few severe contingency cases with the help of mixed-integer non-linear programming. For each objective, ranking of optimal bus locations for reactive power sources have been obtained. The results, so obtained, have been used to arrive at an overall performance sensitivity factor for locating reactive power sources employing an analytic hierarchical process algorithm. The proposed method for reactive power planning has been demonstrated on a IEEE 24-bus reliability test system.
