The United States passed Germany last year to become the world leader in wind capacity, and China's wind capacity doubled for the fourth straight year, according to the Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC). Total worldwide installations in 2008 were more than 27,000 megawatts (mw), dominated by the three main markets in Europe, North America, and Asia, Global wind energy capacity grew by 28,8 percent to reach a total installed capacity of more than 120.8 gtga-watts (GW) at the end of 2008.
