As investor-owned utilities (IOUs) across the nation garner most of the attention concerning the need for a modern energy infrastructure and the development of smart grid projects, mu-nicipal and cooperative utilities have a tremendous opportunity.Smaller in size and corporate infrastructure than their investor-owned counterparts and lightened by less regulation, municipal and co-op utilities are positioned to be the agile, forward-thinking start-ups of the smart grid movement.But to realize those opportunities, munis and co-ops must approach their smart grid dreams as long-term opportunities, rather than short-term projects. The vision of an intelligent grid network is not one of adding specific applications as they become relevant to business operations or customers.
