In the last few years, the "high brightness" light emitting diode (LED) has developed enormously from a niche existence as a high priced designer spotlight to a useful general purpose illumination source with efficiencies of well over 1001m/W and lifetimes of up to 100,000 hours.rnThe cost of high power LEDs is already approaching the costs of the cold cathode fluorescent lamps used as backlights in laptops and TVs and with the uptake of LEDs in the automotive industry, the economies of scale will cause the price to fall even further.
