"There has been a perception that no one is making money online, but there are some people who have done very well," says Ethan Mollick, vice president of business development at eMeta. "Several of our customers have proven you actually can generate money from online content." eMeta has dozens of customers for its eRights technology, which helps digital publishers authenticate users of their content, control access to it, and offer it through various business models. "Every company has its own models, and we can't hope to tell them exactly what they should be," Mollick says, "but a lot of other software companies are trying to come up with what they think will work, and then they push that model out." "What we've done is create a system that allows publishers to implement anything they want―pay-per-view access, concurrency limits, time-based access, or subscriptions, for example―and then find out whether or not those business models will be profitable. People can experiment and pretty quickly figure out what works best, and that means people have been able to achieve significant returns on investment in very different ways."
