Until I moved to Connecticut and embraced the car culture, I never really listened to the radio. Okay, during the few years in my childhood when my father found it more convenient to drive me to school than be ruled by the bus schedule, I memorized more than a few '70s radio hits. But even then, my dad was more likely to pop in a Doors 8-track than sit through mediocre tunes and endless commercial breaks. So early on, I developed what I call the "recommendation acquisition method." Within any given medium (film, book, music), I identified certain individuals who always knew more than I did or who would expose me to new genres. Then I noted what they were into at the moment or asked for a recommendation. In the case of movies, if they didn't have a loaner, I'd shell out for a rental or even pay to go to the theater but with books and music, I'd most often enjoy the pass-along of a used book or dubbed tape.
