In july, when the music industry had squished Napster's illegal file-sharing system, the big record companies seemed at last to be getting a grip on the online music market. Access to Napster had plunged from a high in February of 1.6m users at any given time, to virtually nothing. And the big five record labels had agreed to launch their own, legal, alternatives.
