Suddenly, Robert Mugabe appears to have become both isolated and vulnerable. In the past month, Zimbabwe's president has been hit by the deaths of two senior cabinet ministers in separate car accidents, by harsh criticism from Colin Powell, the American secretary of state, and by rumours of a plotted coup. Although he will probably still run for reelection next April, it is beginning to seem unlikely that he will win.
