This week was the first time since he came to power in 1997 in which there seemed to be a serious chance that Tony Blair might lose his job. Britain's prime minister may be a hero to many Americans, and certainly to George Bush, but he has become unpopular in his own Labour Party and widely mistrusted by the British public. By Wednesday afternoon, however, he suddenly had a new spring in his step, a new self-righteous twang in his voice. Nothing looked more certain than that he would lead his party into the next general election, due in 2005 or, at the latest, in 2006. Quite probably, he will be prime minister for several more years, before handing over to his close colleague-cum-rival, Gordon Brown, the chancellor of the exchequer.
