In Many parts of the world, entrepreneurs cluster around great research universities. In Israel they pour out of the armed forces, where they learn how to lead and gain a taste for technology. Such veterans have created a hive of new com-panies-about 3,000 in technology alone— and attracted venture capitalists and private-equity firms from around the world. Before war erupted in mid-July between Israel and Hizbullah in Lebanon, Israel was the world leader in private-equity investment as a share of gdp (see chart).
