摘要

Willem van heythuysen leans back in his chair looking for all the world as if he has just won several million dollars. Which in a sense he has. This small oil panel by Frans Hals (shown below) has a complex history of attribution; the curtain and book are clearly by another hand. The portrait itself is pure Hals: loosely rendered but very much alive. Yet in 2004 it was described as a copy and sold at auction in Vienna for a mere ?440,000 ($546,000). Now dendrochronological analysis has helped to confirm that it was indeed painted by the master in the 1630s. The Frans Hals Museum in Haarlem is thought to be hoping to acquire it from its private owner; a London dealer has suggested that if the picture were put up for sale it could fetch around £5m ($10m).
