There were more signs of economic weakness in America in October. Orders for durable goods fell by 6.2%, the biggest monthly drop in two years. Consumer spending fell by 1% despite a modest rise in personalincome. And sales of new single-family homes fell by 5.3% to an annual pace of 433,000, the lowest since January 1991. Interest rates on mortgages fell this week after the announcement thatthe Federal Reserve would purchase mortgage-backed securities guaranteed by government-sponsored enterprises and GSE debt.
