The general election in Pakistan on Monday February 18th, when voters pick a new parliament, is supposed to mark a transition from military to civilian rule. But risks associated with the election are great. The poll was postponed once, after a former prime minister and opposition leader, Benazir Bhutto, was assassinated by a suicide-bomber while campaigning late in December. Her supporters claim that the government of Pervez Musharraf somehow had a hand in her death and accuse him of delaying the election to prevent her Pakistan People's Party (ppp) winning a big sympathy vote.
