The world's rapidly ageing population is usually discussed in gloomy terms, as a "demographic crisis", especially in relation to the perceived future burden on healthcare systems. However, if our healthy "middle age" can be stretched out for longer than before, then at an individual level it ought to be cause for celebration. But dealing with this increased longevity will require wide-ranging reforms-and a change of mindset about the elderly. Introducing newrnstrategies to deal with a greying population is far from simple-but it isn't impossible.
