During the past few years, the size of the world's population has become a matter of public debate in a way that has not been seen since the 1970s. The total number of people on the planet, some 6.7 billion at the moment, is forecast to surpass 9 billion by the middle of this century. Many observers fear that an environment that is degraded by climate change will not be able to support such a vast population. Around half the British, according to one opinion poll, believe that people should not have more than two children.
