Marc Simoncini, the founder of Meetic, Europe's biggest dating website, is therefore something of an outsider. His career has seen more ups and downs than the romances he helps to spark. "I have been poor, very rich, ruined and now very rich again, at least on paper," he says. Mr Simoncini comes from upwardly mobile stock. His grandfather was a poor farmer. His father worked his way up the ranks of France Telecom. Mr Simoncini dropped out of college after an internship at a company that worked with Minitel, a pre-world-wide-web online service.
