Standing on the flight deck of the aircraft-carrier USS Abraham Lincoln, before a banner emblazoned with the words "Mission Accomplished", President George Bush proclaimed that "major combat operations in Iraq have ended. In the battle of Iraq, the United States and our allies have prevailed."
