Reading the global media in recent years, one might be left with the impression that Japan's economy, if not the entire country, is teetering on the brink of extinction. Much of the media has a tendency to follow trends, and its dominant narratives can be hard to deviate from, even when they are not entirely grounded in reality. Where decades ago the story of Japan was that it was on the verge of global economic domination; that theme has now about-faced to one that suggests the country is barely surviving.
