Pfizer, an American drugs company, launched a takeover bid for AstraZeneca, a smaller British rival, which could be worth up to $100 billion. Pfizer said it was motivated by Astra-Zeneca's "proud heritage" in innovation as well as the "attractive incentives" provided by the British government to entice biotech companies; the new company would be incorporated in Britain for tax purposes. But AstraZeneca retorted that "big is not necessarily best in pharma".
