Economic risks for the new government

The Labour government is rightly basing its campaign for re-election on 5 May on its economic record. With the UK enjoying its longest period of sustained growth on record, below-target inflation and unemployment at its lowest for over 30 years, it is hardly surprising that opinion polls suggest that the electorate rate Labour much better on the economy than the Conservatives - particularly given the still painful memories of the early 1990s recession and the pound's exit from the ERM.
