Mission Critical: More Interconnections in Less Space with High Performance

Engineers who design electronics for mission-critical systems for today's military aerospace and defense markets are facing unprecedented demand from their customers to pack more and more capability into smaller and smaller boxes. Another challenge, particularly since the war on terror commenced, is the accelerated development and delivery pressure the military is applying to suppliers to produce finished working units in much less time than was necessary in the past. Fifteen years ago, typical new product development cycles in the mil/aero markets were 15 to 18 months. Today, it is fairly common for an OEM to deliver a completely new guidance system, for example, in a matter of six months, which includes everything from the conceptual design stage through completed and tested production units being shipped to their customer. Their customers are demanding shorter lead times - and there is no time for redesign. It must be right the first time. Suppliers like AirBorn who are capable of supporting such a compact schedule must be able to respond and react in an almost real-time scenario.
