This article discusses the role of images, visual popular culture and especially diorama paintings in the creation of nationalism in Norway. The influential theorist Benedict Anderson has privileged the role of print media, and especially newspapers, in the creation and global spread of nation states and nationalism in the nineteenth century, and he does not include visual cuilture in his analysis. This article uses Norway and diorama paintings and diorama buildings to argue that images and visual representation were important in the creation of nationalism in Norway in the late nineteenth century.
