New Privacy Laws Restricting Use Of Social Security Numbers

In 2005, companies with interstate business found themselves with substantial I compliance responsibilities as a result of the growing number of state laws (23 as of January) that govern when and how consumers must be notified about security breaches involving their personal information. A similar patchwork of state laws that regulate companies' use and disclosure of a consumer's Social Security Number (SSN) is often overlooked. Until Congress passes a privacy bill that would pre-empt such state SSN laws, companies must focus their compliance efforts on state regulations regarding such practices and be mindful of the key differences among them.
