The year 2021 was tough for the crude tanker owners as vessel earnings on the major routes were insufficient to cover operating costs. Even firm seasonal demand during winter and port congestion in China failed to support freight rates. However, rates are likely to improve this year, especially in 2H22 as the supply-demand balance in the market improves.
