When dredging hard clay or rock, heavy duty cutter suction dredgers (CSDs) like Jan De Nul's J.F.J. De Nul or DEME's d'Artagnan, are often the best choice, but when working in confined port areas or dredging pipeline trenches in hard soil, backhoe dredgers can prove more effective. Aware of the growing demand for these vessels, Jan De Nul recently decided to order a new backhoe, much bigger than its existing Jerommeke and fitted with a powerful Liebherr P995 hydraulic excavator. Built at the de Donge shipyard at Vlissingen in Holland, Il Principe (The Prince) was originally scheduled for delivery to the yard's Macon Charter division in May this year, but Jan De Nul instead negotiated its purchase after learning that a backhoe commissioned from France couldn't be delivered until 2007.
