Capt Paul Gallie, APM Terminals' Costa Rica project director, told DPC that TCM would be "a gateway terminal to handle Costa Rica's growing exports and imports". As such, it will not compete with Caribbean transhipment terminals, as some commentators had suggested. The giant terminal operator signed a 33-year concession in March to design, finance, build and operate TCM and is said to be investing close to $lBn. Gallie noted that the terminal's expected to handle 1M teu in 2016, its first full year of operation, rising to 2.5M teu by the end of the concession period. It will build on the totals set by Japdeva, the Costa Rican authority controlling the Atlantic coast ports of Moin and Limon which handled 858,161teu in 2010.
