The Sand Engine (see DPCs passim) is the largest 'feeder beach' on the Dutch coastline and has now been in existence for almost two years. Some Forum attendees took the opportunity to visit this amazing Building With Nature coastal management project and listened to great presentations from Jaap van Thiel de Vries of Boskalis (formerly with Oeltares), Matthieu de Schipper (Delft University of Technology and Shore Monitoring & Research) and Simeon Moons (NIOZ Royal Netherlands Institute for Sea Research) into the morphological and ecological developments of the Sand Engine in the first 18 months following its completion - how it's working, what's changed and what may happen next. Ably hosted and sponsored by Boskalis and Van Oord, the technical visit culminated in a chance to walk along the Sand Engine itself. It was thoroughly enjoyable as well as informative.
