During a recent visit by IHS Maritime to Cleveland, Ohio, the Great Lakes conveyer freighter Sam Laud manoeuvred its way down the serpentine Cuyahoga River towards Lake Erie, along the city's wooded Irishtown Bend, a steep hillside overlooking the waterway. It was a routine, nimble passage beneath the Columbus Road lift bridge, but it took place amid environs and a dredging scene that are far from routine. One unusual aspect is the continuing dispute between the Cleveland-Cuyahoga County Port Authority and the US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) about dredging, disposal, and costs stemming from the maintenance of Cleveland Harbor and the Cuyahoga River federal navigation channel.
