THE INTENSE REALISM AND CONCEPTUAL VIGOUR OF THE IRANIAN ARTIST'S STILL LIFES INAUGURATE THE NEW CARDI BLACK BOX GALLERY IN MILAN

The subjects portrayed by ShiranaShahbazi are conspicuously ambiguous, sensual and voluptuous. Everything in the work of this Iranian artist, who was born in Teheran in 1974 but is a daughter of the contemporary western world, leads back in time to a classical atmosphere embellished with a splash of modern ambigui-fas and elevated to the concept of voluptas. The iconography and symbolism of the history of art are re-examined in a contemporary key and subjected to intensely decisive and synthetic, but analytical scrutiny. The sharp and vivid colourrncontrasts, the chiaroscuros, the black and white, the quick and the dead, the divine and the earthly, the precious and the macabre are oppo-sites rich in meanings, hallmarks of this artist's work. She started out as a photographer, but then ventured beyond the borders of that medium to investigate all the possible technical nuances and unexpected surprises of reality.rnThe word photography derives from Greek and literally means writing (gratia) with light (fotos). Shahbazi uses the textual and abstract reflections of light as a way to move from photography and plunge, according to the rules ofrneach different technique, into painting, sculpture and the art of tapestries and murals. The subjects reproduced live intensely in the space of theironeness, and in theirseductive relationships with the other subjects represented.
