The new Albertinum: an ark for the arts on the River Elbe

Nell'agosto 2002 l'esondazionedel fiume Elba recò danni gravissimi alle Staatliche Kunstsammlungen di Dresda. A soffrire furono in particolare le opere conservate nei depositi sotterranei dell'Alte Pinakothek e ancor più quelli dell'Alber-tinum, un edificio barocco a pochi metri dall'argine. Concepito come arsenale, a fine Ottocento l'Albertinum fu trasformato in museo per le collezioni di scultura, ma dopo i bombardamenti della Seconda Guerra Mondiale esso divenne sede anche della pittura dal Romanticismo al contemporaneo. Nei giorni dell'alluvione del 2002 il museo fu teatro di un'operazione di salvataggio durante cui il personale lavorò giorno e notte per trasferire le opere dalle cantine ai piani superiori: qui le statue furono affastellate in un disordine incurante di epoche e scuole, creando associazioni e contrasti che in seguito hanno ispirato il riallestimento di quello che oggi viene chiamato "il nuovoAlbertinum".%In August 2002, the flooding of the Elbe caused serious damage to the Dresden Staatliche Kunstsammlungen. The artworks stored in underground vaults of the Alte Pinakothek in the monumental Zwinger complex suffered great damage, but the hardest hit were those in the Albertinum, an elegant baroque building constructed only a few metres from the river's edge. Originally conceived as an arsenal, the Albertinum was transformed into a sculpture museum in the late 19th century. After the World War II bombings, it also became home to painting from the Romantic to the contemporary eras.
