The new Spanish headquarters of iGuzzini Illuminazione at Sant Cugat del Valles in Barcelona is a concrete utopia designed by Catalan architect Josep Mias. A glass sphere that recalls the visions of Buckminster Fuller, Frei Otto and Ivan Il'ic Leonidov as well as an architectural machine that goes against the flow - of time and more prosaically the cars that hurtle by alongside it on the Montserrat and Avenida de la Generalitat motorway. Known as Cielo iGuzzini, the building has been configured as a sophisticated instrument for presenting light. Inside is a 9,000-square-metre showroom open to the sky in which light becomes the natural form of art on display and the outside world an environment that is seen through different eyes. Mias has not forgotten the important lesson of Enric Miralles - the most emblematic Spanish architect of the last century - and while looking at the sky, he sinks the codes of his architecture in the material world.
