Being neighbours, Holland and Belgium share a language, a 250-km border and a page of history between 1815 and 1830. They now embark on a design challenge in this Boijmans exhibition, featuring 400 designs from 2 centuries (1815-2015). From Belgium's elegant art nouveau to the more austere Dutch version and from Henry van de Velde to Hendrik Berlage, the two "schools" seem to be on an even footing. Belgian design has more of a craft focus and sometimes surrealist details, as Dutch design is often described as plain, restrained and conceptual. After Rotterdam, the exhibition will hop over the border to Ghent.
