Louise Bourgeois (1911-2010) developed numerous sculptural forms in complex tableaux and preparatory drawings over a 70-year career. The most innovative include her Cells cycle, architectural spaces and settings into which the French artist poured her energy for 20 years. Every "cell" is a many-sided and dense microcosm inside an iron cage that functions as a barrier between the outside world and her private universe. The dioramas contain theatre props, furnishings or a single sculpture, each with a different intense atmosphere. The curator Julienne Lorz of the Haus der Kunst in Munich has gathered the Cells into an exhibition (27.2-2.8.2015) in collaboration with Louise Bourgeois Studio and the Louise Bourgeois Trust, and Jerry Gorovoy, Bourgeois' assistant of long standing. Featuring the largest number of Cells ever assembled in one place, the show illustrates the conceptual, architectural and psychological aspects behind this set of works.
