Lidentità di questo edificio sta nella sua semplicità: in questo, è diverso dagli altri pezzi che compongono il nuovo Central Business District chiamato Quartiere Garibaldi-Repubblica. Il Padiglione UniCredit è tre cose insieme: la sala per le assemblee del secondo gruppo bancario italiano, uno spazio pubblico utilizzabile per svariati scopi e un oggetto che fa della propria cripticità la sua cifra stilistica. È un'opera di architettura, ingegneria e design, insieme. La sua forma spaziale-scultorea-organica nasce però da necessità funzionali. Visivamente e fisicamente leggero, si intuisce che è senza fondazioni, fatto di pezzi di legno lamellare montati direttamente su un podio rialzato che nasconde una distesa di parcheggi. De Lucchi poeticamente equipara il padiglione a un seme: "I semi hanno una pelle che li ricopre e protegge un cuore vivo, vitale, fertile... dentro c'è l'essenza della vita". In quanto seme, il padiglione pare essere atterrato qui dopo essere stato sospinto dal vento. La sua pianta è all'incirca a uovo, con una prua sfondata verso piazza Gae Aulenti; la sezione è invece a onda lunga, rivestita da pannelli solari. All'esterno, le centine e le travi di larice composte a reticolo alludono soltanto all'idea di facciata, perché prevalgono sempre e comunque le idee di trasparenza, di montaggio, di tempo libero, di naturalezza, concetti a cui De Lucchi tiene molto.%The identity of this building lies in its simplicity, an aspect that makes it entirely different from the other pieces composing Milan's new central business district in the Garibaldi-Repubblica area The Unicredit Pavilion is three things in one: a conference room for the bank; a public space for a variety of uses; and an object whose cryptic appearance is its hallmark. It is at once a work of architecture, engineering and design. Its spatial-sculptural-organic form is based on functional requirements, however. Visually and physically light, it gives the impression of being without foundations, made up of slices of wood mounted directly on an elevated podium that conceals an expanse of parking lots. De Lucchi poetically compares it to a seed. "Seeds have a skin that covers them and protects a live, vital and fertile heart. Inside, there is the essence of life." As a seed, the pavilion looks as if it has landed after being swept up by the wind. Its plant is approximately an egg, with a blunt bow facing Piazza Gae Aulenti. In section, it is a long wave, faced with solar panels. On the outside, ribs and beams of fir are composed in a grid, merely alluding to the thought of a facade, because the ideas of transparency, assembly, recreation and naturalness prevail all throughout - concepts to which De Lucchi is particularly attached. The programmatic overlapping is part of the project's basis. In addition to being flexible in its configurations, the ground-floor auditorium encompasses a first-floor walkway/gallery for temporary exhibitions. On the upper floors, there are a children's day-care centre for bank employees and an area for company gatherings. Two maxi-screens integrated in the facade and positioned like sails above the entrances endorse the symbiosis between architecture and collective life (the place is especially frequented by young people) as a founding value of this recently built Milanese quarter. A primary aim of the project was the juxtaposition of reserved areas and public ones, in order to maintain close contact between the two. As De Lucchi writes, this has resulted in "a symbol that connects the natural world of the park close by with the men of the skyscrapers".
