What have been the barriers to exploiting wave power up until now? We are a young company and we are doing something very different to what other off-shore wave energy companies did. When we entered the market, in 2011, we saw several big barriers for the wave energy industry. The first was the very high price of offshore systems: working in the middle of the ocean requires the use of very expensive instruments and equipment.Another barrier was reliability, elevated risk due to high waves meant no insurance company wanted to get involved. Another problem is with environmental protection agencies: offshore technology companies connect their equipment to the ocean floor and it disturbs the fish and the nearby marine life. We came up with a very different approach: we connect our system to existing man-made ocean structures such as piers, breakwaters, jetties, seawalls and platforms already in the water. Locating our smart conversion units on structures already there means we can lower prices. The waves are a stable source of power that is typically available 24/7, so the reliability has increased. We were able to secure a full insurance plan for our power stations. The system is environmentally friendly, while not creating any impact on the nearby marine life.
