Will imagery ever substitute the written word? I don't think so. For sure, it will acquire an increasing amount of importance thanks to the ever-increasing quality of static imagery and video, but I don't think it is possible to do without verbal language, spoken or written. How universal is visual communication? On a structural level, visual communication has acquired a global presence thanks to the World Wide Web and smartphones. They constitute a universal visual lexicon. But rooted geographical differences continue to exist, linked to cultural and social factors. One example is the colour of mourning. In the West it's black; in Asia it's White. Also style changes from culture to culture; just think of minimalism in English-speaking countries, and the liveliness in Sputh American countries. I think a worldwide visual language is developing that is increasingly common, although different local "dialects" will remain.
