AN AIRPORT CITY FOR DEVELOPMENT

We opened the new Berlin Brandenburg Willy Brandt Airport at a difficult time. Because of Covid-19, we have not had much air traffic anywhere in Europe since spring 2020. At the same time, we now have a lot to offer: an elegant, spacious and efficient terminal-a modern cathedral of transport! BER Airport has been very well received by the people of Berlin and Brandenburg who have tested the new airport since its opening. We will not be building another terminal for the time being, as originally planned, for economic reasons. But we are still planning the new Airport City, a lively, very interesting district over almost 40 hectares of land with a hybrid block structure; with buildings up to 45 metres high for hotels, conference areas, offices, trade, culture and research. For this purpose, we are looking for investors with credible property sector and urban development ideas. The big advantage of our new airport is the railway station located directly beneath Terminal 1. From there, you can reach the check-in area directly by lift or escalator in just two minutes. No other German airport has such short distances. 14 trains per hour stop at this underground railway station: the suburban railway (S-Bahn), airport express and regional trains and inter-city (IC) trains. This means that the airport is very efficiently connected to the rails and it will be able to incorporate more intercity connections in the future. Together with the motorway connection and the long-distance and regional bus networks, the airport district has all the advantages of excellent intermodality. This is an incentive for investors, creates good accessibility to jobs and means comfort for our passengers. The railway connection is the airport's umbilical cord. Two thirds of passengers to the airport will arrive by train. Whether from Berlin, Potsdam, Leipzig, Dresden, Prague or from the Baltic Sea, Berlin Brandenburg Willy Brandt Airport can be reached quickly. This is an essential issue for the East German economy. Air traffic in the capital region hasgrownveryrapidlyovermanyyears,mostlyby6to8%annually.ln2020,theannual number of passengers will be only 10 million due to the coronavirus crisis - instead of the previous year's 36 million. But after the crisis, BER Airport will be a guarantee for rapid economic recovery. Every euro for the airport is also an investment in the post-pandemic period. The airport will support the economic development of eastern Germany. This development already stands out. Whetherthe Tesla location a few kilometres to the east of the airport or the Siemens research campus in Berlin, both are current investments that would not have been imaginable without an efficient airport with international connections. Tourism in Berlin, one of the top three destinations in Europe, will also make a comeback. Every fourth tourist who comes to Germanywants to go to Berlin. This means a great opportunity for our new Airport.
