Hella Jongerius Patricia Urquiola

Hella Jongerius and Patricia Urquiola can be seen as two of the defining landmarks of the contemporary landscape of design. Even if they come from different and contrasting directions, they are not opposites. They both engage with the mainstream of the industrial system rather than working outside it. They belong to the same generation, having started their careers in the early 1990s emerging from Post Modernism. They have both established studios away from the countries in which they grewup. Urquiola (1961) is Spanish but works in Milan, Jongerius (1963) is from the Netherlands but lives and works in Berlin. They also face the same existential questions that overshadow what might be called the traditional world of design.
