Damen recently delivered two conventional tugs, the 22.5m Don Jose Maria which is a StanTug 2207 and the 30.3m StanTug 3008 Walvis 9, writes Robert Lennox. They have some similarities, both being powered by Caterpillar engines, driving through Reintjes gearboxes to Promarin fixed pitch propellers running in nozzles. Bollard pulls are just under 35 t and speeds over 12 knots in each case. It is interesting to note that, with two superficially similar tugs, the machinery layout is different. The smaller craft has its gensets and fire fighting pump mounted aft of the main propulsion engines, while the situation is reversed in the other vessel with the auxiliaries mounted ahead of the main engines. Walvis 9 has the addition of an electrically driven bow thruster.
