In 1999, commercial buildings spent almost $3.6 billion for district heating service in 117,000 buildings. In 1995, $3.1 billion had been spent on district heating service for 110,000 buildings. During this four-year period, district heating consumption decreased from 533 trillion Btus to 433 trillion Btus annually. Using these statistics provided by the Energy Information Administration, the unit cost of district energy increased from $5.83 per MMBtu in 1995 to $8.22 per MMBtu in 1999. How does that compare to IDEA member experience? Longtime IDEA members will remember the little brown books that contained the proceedings of the International District Heating Association (today known as IDEA). Published annually, records dating back to the association's first meeting in 1909 were lovingly compiled for the benefit of members.
