District energy systems produce steam, hot water or chilled water at a central plant, then pipe that energy to buildings in the community. That distribution of energy is the core of the district energy concept. Transmission of thermal energy through a piping network to multiple users distinguishes a district system from one dedicated to a single building. Energy distribution is a vital component of every district energy system. The efficiency of thermal distribution is a major contributor to the overall efficiency of each district system-and can significantly influence user costs. How efficient are distribution systems? Industry statistics published in 1988 show line losses from 13 percent to 30 percent for utility steam systems. This efficiency measure is computed by comparing steam delivered to steam generated at the central steam plant. Energy loss is even greater.
