Agence France-Presse reported Feb. 13 that construction has begun in Paris on a project to provide heating for an entire city district by extracting hot water from 1.7 km (1.06 miles) below the earth's surface. District heating company CPCU (Compagnie Parisienne de Chauffage Urbain) is carrying out the work in an area north of the city. According to Michel Galas of CPCU, about 100 days of round-the-clock drilling may be needed to reach the required depth. The geothermal system will heat approximately 12,000 apartments and other buildings to be constructed by 2011 in a new residential part of the Paris's 19th district.
