Helius Energy plc and The Combination of Rothes Distillers (CoRD) are teaming up on a 7.2 MW combined heat and power plant in Speyside, Scotland, that will run on a combination of whisky distillery wastes and wood chips from sustainable sources. The project recently was granted planning permission by Moray Council. The electricity generated by the plant, enough to power 9,000 homes, can be used on site or exported to the national grid. At a cost of 35 million British pounds ($50.5 million), the project will also include construction of a facility to turn 'pot ale' - a waste liquid - into fertilizer for use by local farmers.
