Yes, the way the United States sees global warming and reacts is bad for district energy. Many readers will disagree, saying that district energy, coupled with combined heat and power, can double fuel use efficiency and greatly reduce greenhouse gas emissions. They will point to European countries where CHP is embraced while increasing reliance on fuels like coal. They also will point to successful university and hospital CHP projects. Of course, new CHP projects are reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Those of us in this industry know that and are proud of the contributions we have made. The problem is one of perception and knowledge by the general public and our politicians.
