摘要

Yudhijit bhattacharjee Camped out-rnside the Mumbai police station for two days hoping to interview prisoner Amit Kumar, charged with masterminding a massive kidney trade ring in India. "I hadn't shaved in days and was just waiting there," he says. "Finally one of the officers took pity on me." Bhattacharjee was permitted to jot down questions for Kumar to answer for "The Organ Dealer" (page 64). Despite the distressing nature of someone's selling a kidney, Bhattacharjee notes the ethics are not clear-cut. "Some people were so desperate to climb from poverty that they probably lined up to get in Kumar's network. He was ruthless, but to some he is a hero." Bhattacharjee is a staff writer at Science magazine in Washington, D.C. His work has also appeared in The New York Times Magazine, Wired, and The Atlantic.
