The long and dramatic struggle by Cablevision chmn. Chuck Doian to keep HDTV DBS service VOOM alive may not be coming to an end after all. On 1/20 EchoStar Communications Corp. agreed to pay Cablevision $200 mil.for its lone satellite in orbit at 61.5° with the rights to operate 11 DBS frequencies at that location, plus a ground station in Black Hawk, SD. EchoStar 2 operates in the same orbital location. On 2/10, Cablevision signed a letter of intent to divest Rainbow DBS's assets and liabilities. A new private company, VOOM HD, LLC, to be formed by certain holders of Cablevision Class B Common Stock, including Charles and son Tom Dolan, will acquire the business, assets and liabilities of Cablevision's Rainbow DBS satellite business not including those outlined in the definitive agreement with EchoStar noted above.
