Birth of the Platypus

In his 1997 manifesto "THE PLATYPUS Papers," veteran newspaper and magazine photographer Dirck Halstead described a new breed of digital journalist: one with the skill to operate a video camera and at the same time cover a story with a still camera. He likened this strange new hybrid—part still photographer, part camerman, part correspondent, part soundman, and part producer—to the mid-18th century discovery of the platypus, an egg-laying mammal with webbed feet, a beaver-like tail, and a duck-like bill.
