The Trans-Kalahari Corridor: An assessment of bottlenecks and transit time for cross-border road transport operations

Road transport corridors linking SADC countries are characterised by long delays and congestion at border posts, and long transit time and high logistics costs at weighbridges which negatively affect the import and export businesses, trade flow between countries and competitiveness within the region. This has unfortunately rendered the SADC region unattractive for foreign direct investment and has resulted in lack of competitiveness of goods produced and traded in the region. The high logistics costs continue to affect intra-regional trade, as well as market integration. It is arguably and partly for this reason that intra-regional trade and industrialisation continue to lag in comparison to other developing regions, such as those in Asia.
