Maintenance of infrastructure – back to basics

IMMENSE OPPORTUNITIESWe would like to raise the notion of the immense opportunities available in implementing robust maintenance on all infrastructure in our country. The concept of sustainability, as embedded in the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), is recognised the world over. Countries are, however, at various levels of accepting and implementing the all-encompassing concept of sustainability. For some countries the implementation of these SDGs into their initiatives could mean the discouragement of mega brown- and greenfield projects, such as coal-fired power stations, due to their large carbon footprint. In other instances the reducing demand for mega infrastructure build could be due to low population growth, concerted efforts to become carbon-neutral, unaffordability, risks in raising capital, and ongoing overall global uncertainty with respect to revenue.
