Acute esophageal necrosis after kidney transplantation

Acuteesophageal necrosis (AEN),also known as“black esophagus” or“acute necrotizing esophagitis,”isa very rare diseasethatcan be diagnosed by characteristicendoscopicand pathologicfindings. AEN is defined endoscopically as dark pigmentation oftheesophagus with histologicalmucosal necrosis. Theexact pathophysiology is unclear; it is likelymultifactorialand usually results fromacombination oftissue hypoperfusion, impaired local defense barriers,and massivereflux of gastriccontents. [1] There have been very fewcases ofAEN after kidney transplantation. Wereportacase ofAEN in a 53-year-old man after kidney transplant. Informed consent was obtained fromthe patient for the publication ofthiscasereport.
